Night One

As the night progressed, gods returned to their seat and left as they wished, with the unspoken rule of one god to be present with Dionysus on the table at all times. The women, other than Helen and Demeter, were chatting together while their consorts did the same. Poseidon and Neri were also gone along with Zeus. The table had a whole new energy in his absence. Hecate was smiling at Hermes ever since they returned, with Hermes’ hands sat hidden under the table cloth.

“I owe you.” Hermes whispered. “You saved my marriage.”

“I suppose it is my duty now.” I smiled. “May I ask something in return?”

“Of course.”

“How would one acquire your speed?”

“No one can be as fast as me,” he shook his head, “but I know what you want. You would be required to pass a test for me.”

“What is it with gods and putting mortals on trials?” I sighed.

“My man!” Dionysus said. “Trials have been an old tradition for us to truly acknowledge your desires. In the old times, your ancestors lacked the comfort to meet us in person, as well as the technology to accomplish their goals. Many mortals still ask their heart’s desires from us, unaware that there are many who do the same.”

“Like the Olympics now, our trials became a tradition in the process to acknowledge your strength.” Hermes said.

“Okay.” I shook my head. “What is it that you want?”

“Well, as to your luck, I have dropped an item during my escape from Euryale.”

“No.” Aphrodite’s toes tensed in my hands.

“She is harmless.” Hermes laughed. “Best she does is adding men to her collection.”

“Who is she?” I asked.

“A gorgon, sister of late Medusa.” Hermes continued.

“As in the Medusa who can turn me in to stone?”

He shook his head. “We can reverse their curse nowadays with the right potion, but that would require another person to visit after you, and risk being turned into stone themselves.”

“Sounds fun.”

“It is dangerous.” Aphrodite said.

“Not every trial requires one to pleasure women! Be glad Poseidon is not the one who hires him.”

“What is it that you dropped?” I asked.

“Ah, my dear belt.” Hermes played with the wings on his hat. “Crafted and named her myself; Thunder padded Waistband.”

“Don’t fret on my husband’s lack of imagination.” Hecate said. “You will instantly know what it is, as the belt itself is as ugly as his hat.”

“This is a battle helmet!” Hermes defensively reached for the wine. “It is awesome.”

“I never said you were ugly wearing it.” Hecate smiled.

“Thank you.” Hermes blushed in response. His eyes focused on the cold and black olives placed by the white goat cheese for a moment before returning to Hekate.

“Dionysus,” I turned to him, “I do not wish to offend you, but is there anything I can do for you in exchange of an item that might be helpful to me?”

“Do not look down on me for being the god of wine.” Dionysus drank more. “As I carry the same strength in me as my brothers and sisters.
